Spend the summer lifeguarding on the beach on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina!

Shore Beach Service is always looking for lifeguards who enjoy working with people and possess good moral character and high standards of physical fitness. Each year, we hire more than 70 lifeguards from across the country and around the world to fill our available jobs.  Read some of the frequently asked questions that we receive from prospective employees about the job.  

 

Job Description

• Some lifeguards assigned to water observation in highchairs, but others operate a beach rental stand with umbrellas & chairs and/or sailboats.

• Highchair lifeguards watch designated sections of beach keeping focused, alert, and ready to provide assistance.

• Our lifeguards are trained to do both highchair and rentals and will likely do both jobs during the summer.

• We do not have beach rental positions available to people who are not lifeguard certified.

• Rental guards setup, operate, and take down the beach rental stand when assigned to that role.

• Lifeguards attend weekly training sessions that cover open water safety & rescue, first aid, beach ecology, and other job related topics.

Hours & Pay

• Most guards work 6 days per week.

• Highchair guards are on the beach from about 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM

• Rental attendants are on the beach from about 8:00 AM to 5:45 PM (more or less depending on location assignment).

• Gross pay varies with beach assignment and generally ranges from $136 to $168 per day ($816-$1008 per week) for first year guards.

• All lifeguards sign a contract committing to a term of employment that is usually at least 3 months during our season.  Our season is late March-late October.

• Providing the guard completes that term, he or she is eligible for a bonus (about 15% of pay) based on days worked and/or equipment rented.  This bonus is included in the $136-$168 per day estimate.

 

Living Arrangements

• Shore can arrange housing to guards who cannot find their own housing.

• Shore's housing is generally a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and living room.

• The apartments are shared with other Shore employees, with 2 guards per bedroom.

• Rent ranges from about $125 to $150 per week with utilities included. A $300 security deposit is required.

•  Shore does not provide coed housing.

• Many employees arrange for housing and roommates on their own.

• Hilton Head Island is on the southernmost tip of South Carolina, about 15 miles north of Savannah, Georgia & 95 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.

Job Qualifications

• Be at least 17 years of age.

• Possess current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid.

• Demonstrate ability to swim 500 meters (550 yards) in 10 minutes or less.

• Show evidence of a recent physical examination.

• We prefer experience in water safety, but it is not required.

• Backgrounds in customer service and/or athletics are other attributes that Shore Beach Service looks for in an applicant.

• You can apply without certifications and the physical being completed. They must be completed by your first day of employment.
