Lifeguard Competitions

Shore Beach Service’s 24th annual Lifeguard Competition took place this June at Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach Park. Shore’s Beach Patrol supervisors are the team captains and teams. The competition rewards teamwork along with recognizing individual excellence. Every lifeguard competes and receives team points in correlation to the place that the lifeguard finishes the event. A top 5 finish earns that lifeguard individual points that are tallied to crown the overall women’s and men’s champion. The individual points are also used to create a regional competition team. The competition is scheduled as a three-night affair. In each event, the women and men compete separately.

The 2023 South Atlantic Lifesaving Association (SALA) Regional Lifeguard Competition was held in Carolina Beach, North Carolina in July. The two-day competition pitted 268 lifeguards from 12 beach patrol organizations from as far north as Virginia Beach, Virginia south to Jacksonville Beach, Florida against each other. Shore Beach Service sent a team of 19 lifeguards, primarily determined by individual points in our local competition.

In most events, men and women compete seperately. “Open” events, are for competitors of any age, but primarily has athletes under age 30. Most of Shore’s team competed in the open events. In the open events, points are awarded for any top 10 finish, with anyone in the top 5 earning a medal. In the age groups, the top 3 places earn medals and points.

Overall, Hilton Head finished 4th in the Large Beach division, with 170 points, our most points scored at the SALA Competition. Full rests can be found a salausla.org/lifesaving-sport

Shore Beach Service sent 2 of our best athletes to Virginia Beach to vompete in the USLA National Championships. Jan Hanzal and Leonardo Trevisan made Hilton Head proud, earning medals by taking 4th in the nation in the Men’s Landline Rescue Rac, teaming with Chad Motz and Trentin Piwinski from the Outer Banks. Our men again teamed with the Outer Banks to get points in the Taplin Relay, with Jan’s relay team placing 9th and Leo’s earning 16th. Our team’s other points were won with Jan placing 14th in the Surf Race. This was Shore’s best performance in the USLA competition.
