Shore Beach Service\u2019s 27th annual HHI Lifeguard Championships took place over 3 nights in June at Hilton Head Island\u2019s Coligny Beach Park.<\/span>\u00a0The competition rewards teamwork along with recognizing individual excellence, as every lifeguard is drafted on a team captained by Shore’s\u00a0 supervisors. Guards compete and earn team points in correlation to the place they finish in each event. Competitors earn individual points for a top 5 finish, and those points are tallied to crown a Women\u2019s Champion and a Men\u2019s Champion. The individual points are also used to help construct a regional competition team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2025 SALA Regional Lifeguard Championships were held in Nags Head, North Carolina in July. The two-day competition pitted 317 lifeguards from 12 beach patrol organizations from as far north as Virginia Beach, Virginia and as far south as Jacksonville Beach, Florida against each other. All competitors are members of the South Atlantic Lifesaving Association (SALA).\u00a0 Shore Beach Service sent a team of 17.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In most events, men and women compete seperately. “Open” events, are for competitors of any age, but primarily has athletes under age 30. Most of Shore’s team competed in the open events. In the open events, points are awarded for any top 10 finish, with anyone in the top 5 earning a medal. In the age groups, the top 3 places earn medals and points.<\/p>\n

Overall, Hilton Head finished 6th in the Large Beach division, with 75 points. Full results can be found a salausla.org\/lifesaving-sport<\/p>\n

Shore Beach Service sent 2 of our best athletes to Virginia Beach to compete in the USLA National Championships. Jan Hanzal and Leonardo Trevisan made Hilton Head proud, earning medals by taking 4th in the nation in the Men’s Landline Rescue Race, teaming with Chad Motz and Trentin Piwinski from the Outer Banks. Our men again teamed with the Outer Banks to get points in the Taplin Relay, with Jan’s relay team placing 9th and Leo’s earning 16th. Our team’s other points were won with Jan placing 14th in the Surf Race. This was Shore’s best performance in the USLA competition.<\/p>\n
