Shore Beach Service lifeguards are certified in lifesaving, CPR, and first aid. Most are college students from across the country and around the world. In addition to their certifications, our lifeguards participate in weekly training sessions that prepare them for the job and our lifeguard competition held annually on Hilton Head. Our competition, which consists of various swimming and running events, is used to select our team to send to the South Atlantic Lifesaving Association’s competition.<\/p>\n

Shore lifeguards also participate in several social events. Restaurants, including Casey’s, the Hurricane Bar, Black Marlin, Chow Daddy’s and Marley’s have hosted parties to welcome our lifeguards to the island. Zipline Hilton Head (@ziphiltonhead)allowed our guards to use their Zipline and Aerial Adventure courses…an amazing experience! Shore’s staff often participates in a the St Patrick’s Day Parade on Hilton Head, with Shore lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards passing out 1,000’s of wristbands with the USLA’s top safety tip “Swim Near A Lifeguard.”<\/p>\n
Everyone looks forward to Shore’s biggest social event of the year, the Employee Appreciation Party (also known as Shore Prom). For the last several years, the party has been held at Poseidon’s Rooftop Bar. The food and views are always fantastic! After dinner, there are several presentations, including medals and ribbons for local and regional competition, as well as plaques for Women’s, Men’s and Team champions of the Lifeguard Competition. The evening concludes with the highly anticipated awarding of the Rookie of the Year and Lifeguard of the Year.<\/p>\n

Since 1996, Shore Beach Service’s management staff has selected a lifeguard who best exemplifies our Top Ten Values and Goals & Objectives as the Lifeguard of the Year.<\/p>\n
The honor is named the Scott Freiberger Award, in memory of a former Shore Beach Service lifeguard who passed away due to an aneurysm in 1996 at the age of 23. Since 2022, the Freiberger family has generously contributed to the winner’s charity of choice.<\/p>\n
